Fall Home Maintenance Checklist for Fairfield County Homeowners
By Northeast Home Repair ·
What to fix before a Connecticut winter: gutters, spigots, caulking, detectors and roof checks — in the order that matters.
Why fall matters in Connecticut
Freeze-thaw cycles, nor'easters and ice dams do most of their damage to Fairfield County homes between December and March. A few hours of work in October prevents the most common winter repair calls we get.
1. Clean gutters and downspouts
Clogged gutters overflow, soak fascia boards and help ice dams form. Clean them after most leaves have dropped, and make sure downspouts discharge at least 4 feet from the foundation.
2. Shut off and drain outdoor spigots
Close the interior shut-off valve for each hose bib, then open the outside faucet to drain it. Disconnect hoses — a hose left attached traps water and can split the pipe.
3. Seal gaps around windows and doors
Replace cracked caulk and worn weatherstripping. If you can see daylight around a closed door or feel a draft, you're paying to heat the outdoors.
4. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
Heating season is when CO risk rises. Test every detector and replace any unit older than 10 years.
5. Look at the roof from the ground
Use binoculars to check for missing or lifted shingles and loose flashing around chimneys and vents. Small roof repairs are far cheaper before snow load arrives.
