Handyman or Contractor? How to Know Who to Call
By Northeast Home Repair ·
A plain guide for Connecticut homeowners on which jobs suit a handyman and which need a licensed specialist.
The short answer
Call a handyman for repairs, replacements and small improvements that don't change your home's structure or require new wiring, gas or plumbing lines. Call a specialist contractor for major remodels, new circuits, gas work and structural changes.
Good handyman jobs
Drywall patching, painting, trim and door repair, fixture swaps, faucet and toilet repairs, deck board and fence repairs, gutter work, caulking, flooring, TV mounting and inspection punch lists.
Jobs for a licensed specialist
New electrical circuits or panel work, gas lines, new plumbing runs, structural beam changes and large additions. In Connecticut, many of these also require permits.
